Grave marker investigation update

GILBERT, La. (KNOE 8 News) - We have an update about a story you first saw back in June. Another grave marker has been dusted off and returned to the proper grave. Our Nolan Crane shows us how a stranger tracked down the family of Lee Henry Watson.

Family and friends of Henry Lee Watson walked to his grave site at the Oakley Cemetery in Gilbert for a special ceremony. His grave marker was stolen years ago. Thanks to one of our viewers the grave marker has been returned.

"When I saw the report I was disgusted with the situation," said Steve Ray.

Ray couldn't believe someone would have the audacity to steal grave markers of those who served our country in the military. He loves genealogy and got in contact with Watson's family.

"I had no idea that Henry Watson's grave marker was missing. We did not know and we did not hear about it until much later," said Steve Anna Johnson.

"I thought if I could look through the phone book and could call people I'd be able to locate somebody. I did that," said Ray.

"We received a call from Mr. Ray and he was trying to get in touch with some of the relatives of Henry Watson. I happened to be the only one he could get in touch with," said Nettie B. Brown

Genealogy for ray isn't just a hobby; it's a labor of love. With his friends help they prepared a spot for the grave marker to be secured. They poured cement. Once it set they cleaned it off.

"It's been a long time coming but we want this to be all behind us. I'm so glad god has made it possible for this tomb for Henry Watson has been resolved," said Brown

Family and friends who showed up today to once again pay their respects to Henry Watson say he can now rest in peace.

The Monroe Police Department still have five other grave markers in their evidence room. We have attached a slide show for you to look through.
