Notes about the Winnfield Tigers

They Move the Chains: Only two starters return on offense to a team that went 9-1 in the regular season last year. New quarterback Justin Johnson had a good spring. Brandon Hargrove and Chris Ellis, will compete with freshman J'Anthony Foster for carries at running back. Since Harper and Ellies see extensive time on the defense, coaches are hoping Foster can emerge as the main rushing threat.

Blitz Patrol: Winnfield returns a terrific trio that will be counted on heavily. Brandon Hargrove and Damion Hardwell are 3-year starters at defensive tackle while Chris Ellis is a 3-year starter at linebacker. Chris Bush and Laroderick Evans round out the five returning starters on defense. Hargrove and Hardwell give the Tigers some beef up front as they combine to weight over 550 pounds. Their push up the front will be the key to the Tigers defense.

Cleats to Fill: Defensive end Michael Patters will be missed as he has a new address in Baton Rouge playing for the LSU Tigers. It's still a competition for who becomes the starter next to Hargrove and Hardwell, but whoever it ends up being will have to channel their inner-Patterson to make an impact.

Unsung Hero: Offensive lineman Shelby Jones flies under the radar, but certainly is respected by his teammates and coaching staff. The 3-year starter and will move from center to guard this year. He will be counted on to protect a new quarterback and create holes for the new running backs.

Ace Watch: Winnfield has been a hot spot for colleges when it comes to recruiting for some time now. Michael Patterson added to that list when he left for LSU this spring. Two players that could end up as aces are the guys he lined up next to last year. Brandon Hargrove and Damion Hardwell have the experience and resumes to be the next Tiger star.

National Ink: Hargrove and Hardwell are D-1 prospects. They have the size and the experience to be the next Winnfield guys to suit up on Saturdays. Chris Ellis is another guy that could have a letter or two in his mailbox at some point this season.

Must-See Matchup: Coach Pyles says the non-district schedule this year is the x-factor for the season. They open with Many, but their schedule is one with lots of uncertainty. New teams to the division to go along with familiar teams with new coaches have several question marks going in to each week. Games will be "must-see" because the teams don't know what to expect.

Postseason Prospects: Winnfield is a traditional power that has made 39 postseason trips including seven-straight. The Tigers went 9-1 during the regualr season and lost in the second round of the playoffs last season. Seven total returning starters make this postseason trip a little more difficult, but don't count out Andy Pyles squad.

Coach Talk: "We win this season if our inexperienced guys step up and improve and fill the rolls they need to fill. [At runningback] Hargrove is 260 and will be a power guy, Chris Ellis will get some carries, but we hope J'Anthony Foster emerges as the starter to take pressure off the other two to have to play both ways,"
-- said Winnfield coach Andy Pyles.
