Notes about the Rayville Hornets

They Move the Chains: The Hornets offense returns seven starters from last season. Junior Lavernon McGraw steps in for Deleyoung Miller at quarterback. McGraw has the work ethic to be special as he is the first one at practice and the last one to leave. Junior TE Jamarion Johnson will give McGraw a nice target. Johnson has soft hands and is considered an exceptional blocker.

Blitz Patrol: The defense returns 9 starters from last season. Senior cornerback Jabari Franklin covers the other team's best receiver and has a great football work ethic. Senior defensive tackle Ernesto Rodriguez is a 4 year starter who is the leader of the defensive line.

Cleats to Fill: Kickers like Jonathan Wallace do not come along every year. Very few teams utilized their kicker as much as Rayville did last season, but Wallace has moved on to Grambling. He gave Rayville options on offense. Last year he knocked down a 46 yard field goal and he even tried a field goal from 57 yards out. Coach Lent Bursey says they are in the process of going through special teams drills to figure out who can fill this position.

Unsung Hero: Coach Bursey says they need the entire offensive line to develop for the Hornets to succeed this season. No major stars have emerged yet, but the Hornets are hopeful that this unit will be solid.

Ace Watch: Senior Safety Tommy Garcia is a 3-year starter who is considered the quarterback of the secondary. Garcia is the glue that holds that unit together as he is great at covering up for others mistakes. Garcia is due to have a two or three interception game and strut away with a KNOE 8 player of the week award.

Must-See Matchup: Week 3 vs. Ruston will be a measuring still game for Rayville. The Hornets would also like to get some revenge on Union Parish. The Hornets have lost to the Farmers by a touchdown or less the past two seasons. Rayville had opportunities in both of those games, but fumbles in the red zone killed their chances.

Postseason Prospects: Last season the Hornets were 4-6 and missed the playoffs. Coach Bursey is emphasizing team chemistry this year. He's says the Hornets will win if they are good teammates to each other on the field and off the field. The Hornets are focused on avoiding costly mistakes and being more consistent on both sides of the ball.

Coach Talk: "It's all about perception and the attention to detail. If your teammate or you doesn't pick up a piece of tape on the locker room floor, then how can you expect them to execute on Friday night? Everything we do serves a purpose."— Rayville Coach Lent Bursey
