Notes on the Oak Grove Tigers

They Move the Chains: The offense returns five starters from last season. The Tigers will run a Georgia Tech option type offense featuring Junior quarterback Chris Mitchell. Senior tailback Deion Wilson was an honorable mention All-State LWSA running back last season after rumbling for more than 1,000 yards. Guard Sam Dugan works hard in the trenches and will be counted on to anchor the offensive line.

Blitz Patrol: The Tigers defense returns four starters from last season. Senior Safety Ty Davis will make all the calls from the secondary. Senior cornerback Malcolm Miles is the Tigers "shut down" corner as he will will get the assignment of shutting down the opponents best receiver. Transfer Cardaveian Parker turned heads in the spring and should make an immediate impact with his speed and athletic ability.

Cleats to Fill: The Tigers have to replace nose guard Sam Perrell up front on their defensive line. A committee of three to four players will try to fill that void. Senior defensive tackle Ryan Smith, senior defensive tackle Chad Steelwell, and senior defensive tackle Dwayne Middleton appear to be up to the task. New Coach Gary Adkins realizes he has some big sneakers to fill in as he takes over for Louisiana coaching legend Vic Dalrymple. With 25 years of coaching experience, this is not Adkins first rodeo. He tells KNOE 8 sports he is up the challenge.

Unsung Hero: Sophomore Jackson Wiley earned a taste of varsity last year at wide receiver excelling on the JV team because of his speed. Now he'll have a chance to make a difference fulltime on varsity this year at multiple positions. He's the Tigers backup quarterback.

Ace Watch: Senior tight end Cole Pippen is a three year starter and is versatile enough to line up wide as a wide receiver. The tight end position is critical in the Tigers offense and Pippen will be counted on to move the chains with his soft hands.

Must-See Matchup: Week 1 vs. Rayville. Coach Adkins will make his Oak Grove debut against a very explosive Hornets squad. Rayville has had Oak Grove's number over the last couple of years so this would be an excellent opportunity for Adkins to win over fans early on his tenure.

Postseason Prospects: Oak grove finished last season 6-6 and lost in the 2nd round to Ouachita Christian. They are a perennial playoff power that expects to go to the postseason every year even in their transition to Class 2A. The Tigers feature solid skill position players. The success of this team will depend on how well they execute up front on the offensive and defensive lines.

Coach Talk: "I don't know if going to 2A is going to be an adjustment because Oak Grove down through the years has always played 2A, 3A, and 4A teams. The media and parents are concerned, but we'll be okay." — Oak Grove Head Coach Gary Adkins
