Notes about the Caldwell Spartans

They Move the Chains: The Spartans return five starters from last season. Bryan Bryant is a leader on the offensive line and in the weight room. He is critical blocker that helps the Spartans move the chains. Darius Gallow had a breakout season with 33 catches. Coach Barton says he expects Gallow to duplicate that performance this season in the Spartans spread offense. Gallow's 4.5 forty yard dash speed stretches the defense and opens up routes underneath for others.

Blitz Patrol: The defense returns four starters from last season. Aaron Herrera plays with a high motor. Coach Barton says he's the best all-around defensive player they have. A lot of their defensive scheme depends on Herrera to stop the run, but his football IQ helps him meet that challenge.

Cleats to Fill:
The Spartans will miss middle linebacker Dorrian Gagne. Dylan Rodgers is slated to try and fill Gagne's shoes and be a leader from the linebacker position. Rodgers needs to be physical, aggressive, and play fast since Caldwell's schedule is peppered with running teams.

Unsung Hero: The Spartans lost their entire secondary except for senior free safety Jesse Hernandez. He makes sure the secondary makes the right adjustments and is aligned correctly. Barton says this season Hernandez will have to be more of a teacher because several teams run no huddle or quick-snap offenses. As a result, coaches often don't have time to make adjustments from the sideline.

Must-See Matchup: The week 3 Mangham game is always a classic. However, Caldwell has had very few wins against them recently. That's a tough pill to swallow for head coach and Mangham graduate Bo Barton. Caldwell also has a grudge match against 2011 district champion Marksville in week 8.

Postseason Prospects: This is the 3rd year under head coach Bo Barton. Last year, the (8-3) district champions lost in the first round of the playoffs to East Feliciana. To advance further in the playoffs, Barton says his team needs to not just go out and play, but race out on the field expecting to win every game.

Coach Talk: "Our team has grown up and is hungry to win. Last season was a good taste of success, but if we expect to win this season we'll be even more successful."
— Bo Barton Caldwell Head Coach
