About the Bastrop Rams

They Move the Chains:
The Rams return four starters from last year's offense. Jamari Payne is a senior wide receiver who is very versatile. He can play the slot, line-up as an outside receiver, or they can bring him out of the backfield. Payne is a great player that can make plays when you put the ball in his hands. Head Coach Thomas Bachman says the offense goes as junior quarterback Christian Doaty goes. He spreads the ball around and helps the offense execute a no huddle attack.

Blitz Patrol: Five starters return from last year's defense. Coach Bachman says senior defensive tackle Johnnie Marsaw is the leader of the football team. He has a good motor, plays hard, and is very versatile. On the defensive line, the Rams rely on senior defensive end Rufus Martin. He brings speed, height, athleticism, to the table. Bachman says Martin is a player other teams will have to gameplan for.

Cleats to Fill: Wide Receiver Jay Wilson has moved on to play at Central Arkansas. That takes away 1800 yards of production from the offense. Bastrop needs the receivers on the team to collectively replace his production. Eight sophomores are at the skill position spots on offense and they need all of them to step up. Isaiah Graham is a (6-1) sophomore receiver that played a few games as a freshman last season. Coach Bachman says sophomore receiver Travion Burks has the potential to be a good football player. Burks plays in the slot and can also come out of the backfield.

Ace Watch: Junior Quarterback Christian Doaty is a player to watch. Last season as a backup he played in nine games and threw for more than 400 yards and 6 touchdowns. Now that he is running the show, the offense can excel if he uses his legs and his arm effectively, and limits his mistakes.

Must-See Matchup: Week 8 against Neville is the game to circle on Bastrop's schedule. The Tigers are the defending state runner-up. It's a rivalry game fans always circle and look forward to.

Postseason Prospects: The Rams were 8-4 last season and lost in the 2nd round to Teurlings Catholic. They have been a perennial playoff team. Thomas Bachman says his team can be successful this season if they win the turnover battle, utilize their personnel properly to win, and prevent explosive plays.

Coach Talk: "Junior center Rodney Jackson is very athletic and intelligent. He's a hard working kid that doesn't say a lot but he shows up and works hard. He's a leader of the offensive line." — Thomas Bachman Bastrop Head Coach
