Judge warns everyone during the Jonesboro Mayor Trial

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Mayor Leslie Thompson went back to court today but this time there wasn't a march or a rally from his supporters. The judge has warned everyone if they use race in the case he will hold them in contempt. Our Nolan Crane was in the courtroom where witnesses started taking the stand.

Supporters of Jonesboro Mayor Leslie Thompson met at the courthouse, instead of marching from town hall with the mayor, which has been the custom since the trial for malfeasance in office started. You might remember yesterday when police interrupted the march. Now a member of the New Black Panther Party Mauricelm Lei Millere who flew in from Washington DC says he's not even allowed inside.

"They gave me a subpoena; they said I couldn't enter the courtroom. They swore in other witnesses who have to be in. when they give you a subpoena you have to be in the courtroom. They said I couldn't come in," said Millere.

Millere says he has been called as a witness. He says it was done to keep him from entering which still shocks him.

"It's amazing because I have no ties to this case in that sense. I was not part of the administration of the city or anything," said Millere.

While some supporters of the mayor were outside, inside the state auditor took the stand as a witness. Daryl Purpera testified saying, "We can't audit what isn't there." He said the city of Jonesboro under the leadership of Mayor Leslie Thompson has lacked adequate documentation to even complete an audit five straight years. As a result, the city of Jonesboro has been on the non-compliance list.

During cross examination Mayor Thompson's lawyers focused on the town's willingness to allow auditors access to the towns records. There are almost 50 witnesses that have been sworn in and taken an oath. We will hear from some of them Saturday. Lawyers representing Mayor Leslie Thompson say despite the slow pace speed of this trial so far they expect it to speed up.
