Affordable Care Act to start enrollment October 1st

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Whether you are in favor of the new plan or not, open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act starts October 1, 2013.

At a local healthcare meeting in Monroe, patients with and without health insurance discussed the ACA or Obamacare, with healthcare representatives.

"Most people who are uninsured actually have jobs," says Tony Garr with Get Covered America/Enroll America, "and the primary reason the don't sign up is because they can't afford it."

After much debate the last few years, Obamacare has been signed, sealed, and will be delivered on January 1, 2014. Open enrollment starts in October, and Garr says this program is providing a new opportunity for the uninsured.

"The first thing we would encourage people to do to go online to Healthcare.gov, and see what's available," says Garr. At the web site Healthcare.gov, someone looking for health insurance can enroll, starting in October, then see each coverage plan that best suits them.

Many that already have insurance, are asking how this will affect them.

"About a thousand dollars of your health insurance premiums, goes to paying for the uninsured," says Garr, "and so once we get everyone insured, this cost shifting that goes on in today's world, will go away."

Tony Garr believes the ACA not only is a new choice for the uninsured, but is a stable fall back plan for everyone else.

"Always know that you can always get health insurance elsewhere," says Garr "and you will never be turned down again because of a pre-existing condition."
