An unlikely hero saves a man’s life

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A Monroe man rescued a dog from the local shelter less than a month ago. This morning, the dog paid it forward. Our Nolan Crane explains why this man's best friend is getting the additional title of hero.

Some say dogs are a man's best friend, but David Duncan and his family say this dog that he rescued from an animal shelter earlier this month is a hero.

"I was asleep and the dog kind of jumped and woke me up," said David Duncan.

"To me the dog is a hero because like I told him it's kind of like he was paying you back. He rescued the dog from the animal shelter and now the dog rescued him," said Bennie Duncan.

The dog woke David up a little before one o'clock in the morning.

"I ran out with the phone and got the dog and called 911. I mean it all happened really fast," said David Duncan.

At the time his whole house, every room and almost every board was destroyed from a fire.

"It's kind of disheartening you know, knowing your parents built it. My mother laid the brick on the bottom part. She had a big spoon that she mixed mortar with to put on there and lay the brick," said Bennie Duncan.

David's house isn't the only thing that needs to be repaired, this use to be a white ford pickup truck but as you can see the wheels have melted off and there is nothing that is salvageable.

Family and friends are rallying together to help David. They are making plans to demolish what is left of the house and they will build a new home. Family and friends say the situation could have been a lot worse.

"We are glad that nothing happened to him because you can't replace him but you can replace the house," said Bennie Duncan.

David says if it wasn't for his guardian angel the fire would have been a much bigger tragedy. The damage is so wide-spread that investigators are having a hard time determining what caused the fire and where it started. Luckily, no one was injured.
