Update: Accent Marketing responds to Monroe closing

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (AP) - Layoffs loom for workers at Accent Marketing's call center in Monroe.

Mayor Jamie Mayo and Northeast Louisiana Economic Alliance President Tana Trichel confirmed Tuesday that Accent Marketing is closing the center.

A spokesman for the company said 60 people will lose their jobs when the center shuts down Oct. 19.

The company was lured to the now state-owned, former State Farm Insurance Co. complex in 2007 with a $3.2 million incentive package from the cities of Monroe and West Monroe, the state and the Ouachita Economic Development Corp.

It quickly grew to employ almost 500 with a $12.8 million annual payroll, but lost a major client that reduced the workforce significantly.

Mayor Jamie Mayo tells KNOE 8 News state employees who are still currently working at the State Office Building downtown will be relocated to the vacated Accent marketing location. The State Office Building was recently sold to Vantage Healthcare. The building Accent is vacating is  a state owned facility.

Statement from ACCENT Marketing Services:

Since 2007, ACCENT Marketing Services has been a proud part of the Monroe community, providing high-quality jobs and investing thousands of hours of computer skills, technical support skills, and customer service training in the community.  Despite our diligent and best-faith efforts to secure sufficient volume to sustain our Monroe center, we have had to make the difficult decision to close this engagement center on October 19.  The closure this will affect approximately 60 positions over the next 2 months.

We understand the impact these changes will have on our loyal, talented and hardworking employees and are committed to supporting them throughout this transition.  This includes actively partnering with local officials to identify and coordinate outplacement resources.  We are also offering severance pay based on tenure and rate of pay with the company.  Additionally, we are providing relocation assistance for all employees who transfer to other positions within the company.  And, we are bringing in professional counselors to assist employees through this transition.
