MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to support the three City of Monroe ten-year property tax renewals that will be on the November 16th ballot.

The three proposals are a renewal of the 1.88 mil Recreation Tax; the renewal of the 1.06 mil Safety Services Tax and a renewal of the 1.31 Drainage tax. Early voting is Nov. 2-9.

Before taking a position on the taxes, the Monroe Chamber Governmental Committee met with David L. Barnes, Curtis Heard and Stacey Haney from the City's Department of Administration to discuss the tax renewals, the current use of those funds and to about the need for future funding. Barnes explained that the taxes provide critical supplemental support to recreation, public works and the City of Monroe Police and Fire department.

The first proposition generates approximately $735,000 per year and is used to maintain and operate community centers and recreational facilities. The second proposition is for 1.06 and is used to purchase equipment and to maintain and operate safety services provided by the Monroe Police Department and Fire Department. The tax generates a little over $414,000 per year. The final proposition is for public works for the purpose of operating drainage facilities.  It is for 1.31 mils and generates about $513,000 per year.

The Chamber's Governmental Division monitors the programs, policies and actions of all taxing authorities in Ouachita Parish.  Since businesses pay approximately 86% of all property taxes in Ouachita Parish, the Monroe Chamber is keenly interested in property tax initiatives.  After meeting with Department of Administration officials and reviewing the proposals, the board agreed that it is important to the wellbeing of the city of Monroe that all three taxes pass and voted to support all three measures.
