Gulfport Police begin holiday traffic campaign

GULFPORT, Miss. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Gulfport police have started a holiday traffic-enforcement campaign that will wrap up at midnight Sept. 2.

Police, participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over safety campaign, began increased patrols Friday night for a 17-day stretch. The Sun Herald reports ( ) police are out in force looking for impaired drivers and are using sobriety checkpoints and electronic signs to get their message across.

National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says on average of 167 people are killed by drunken drivers during the Labor Day weekend.

Gulfport police recommend those who plan to drink make arrangements to ride with a sober driver.
