Health law proponents converge in Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina says he doesn't believe Republicans would be blamed for a government shutdown if Congress uses budget negotiations to try and defund the federal health care overhaul.

DeMint, who heads the Heritage Foundation, on Monday kicked off a nine-state town hall tour designed to spur support for the effort to cut off funding for the 2010 federal health care law. The idea has divided Republicans, with some in the party calling the approach counterproductive and dangerous politically.

Speaking to reporters before the event, DeMint dismissed the idea that the effort would hurt Republicans and noted that the party ran in 2010 on the promise to repeal the law.

Supporters of the law are holding rallies to counter the Heritage town halls.
