JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The American soldier who killed 16 Afghan villagers in the massacre on two villages in March 2012 is expected to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty.

A sentencing hearing for Staff Sgt. Robert Bales begins later this morning with the selection of jurors who'll decide only if Bales' life sentence includes a chance for parole.

Nine Afghan villagers have been flown in to testify.
