Race to 5th congressional seat qualification

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)-  As many had anticipated State Senator Neil Riser was in Baton Rouge bright and early on the first day of qualifying.

State Representative Marcus Hunter left Monroe today and made it just before the Secretary of State's office closed this afternoon along with Representative Robert Johnson.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo plans to go tomorrow and District 14 State Rep. Jay Morris will head south Wednesday.

With the announcement of US Representative Rodney Alexander's departure the 5th Congressional seat election is expected to field multiple candidates.

But with Alexander's sudden announcement also came a quick deadline of this Wednesday to qualify for the race.

"And of course I will be going down on Tuesday to qualify and I have just received so many calls from through the district" says Mayo.

While others will wait until the last day.

"I plan to qualify for the fifth congressional district seat on Wednesday I will qualifying as a free market conservative and somebody who is going to go to Washington and fight these government regulations that are destroying our small businesses " says Morris.

The fifth district covers 24 parishes across northeast Louisiana through central Louisiana including all areas that run along the Mississippi state line.

Democratic Representative Marcus Hunter feels this gives him an advantage because he has worked within the district for the past two years.

"If you operation essentially in a bubble for the last year or couple of years you really don't know what is going on in the 5th congressional district. You can hypothesize about it but if you don't know what's going on in St.Joe, or what's goes on in Marksville or what goes on in Rambling, Alexandria, Monroe, or Bastrop. You have managed to box yourself into this one area and give this us verses them attitude there is no way you will be able to go to those votes and be like oh ya now I want to help you." says Hunter.
