MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A Monroe man is beaten with a hammer by a woman early Sunday morning. Police said 52-year-old Clifton James broke into a home near the intersection of Berg Jones Lane and Short Thomas Street. He was also armed with a small knife, according to police.

Detectives said the victim was aiming to protect herself and her three children. Cops said James also slapped a phone out of the victim's hand.

Police said James was found near the home and told them a different story than the woman. According to the arrest report, the suspect told authorities the women attacked him for no reason in the bedroom and in the living room.

Officers interviewed the victim's oldest son, who had a similar story to his mother.

Police transported the suspect to LSU-Conway and then to OCC.  James is charged with Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery, and Trespassing. He was slapped with a $27,000 bond.
