MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - UPDATE: The three-year-old boy shot in his south Monroe home this week has died. Now, obstruction of justice charges related to Thursday's shooting on Dixie Avenue are pending.

Police say the mother of the toddler called police after hearing a gunshot and finding the little boy had been shot. She told police that another child, 5-years-old, was playing with a loaded gun when it went off.

Police questioned several adults at the scene and believe they received statements that are not true.

UPDATE Friday 1:30 PM

Police tell KNOE that the 3 year old shot Thursday by another child, remains in critical condition in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The toddler is on life support after accidentally being shot by a 5 year old in his south Monroe home.

No arrests have been made at this time, but obstruction of justice charges are pending. Monroe Police are still investigating the incident and working out details of the case.

Previous Report:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Police are on the scene of a shooting involving a three year-old boy.

Update: The mother of the child has told police another child, 5-years-old, was playing with the gun when it went off. Mark Johnson with Monroe Police says there were several adults and children at the home when they arrived. Johnson says they will get to the bottom of what happened. Johnson says the mother drove the injured child to the hospital.

"There's more to this story and we're going to find out what it is," says Johnson, "we're not happy with the story we're being told, and it's not good, and it's not looking good for this baby."

Neighbors are not happy knowing a loaded gun was within a child's reach.

"Guns shouldn't be around kids anyway," says Johnathan Smith, "you know it should have been better protected, and I think this incident probably would have never happened."

As of 10:00pm, the toddler remains in critical condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. No arrests have been made, but obstruction charges are pending.

Original Report:

The child is currently being treated at the hospital for life-threatening injuries. The shooting happened just after 1:00 p.m. at a home located at 201 Dixie.

Police do not know if the child was shot or if he shot himself, nor will they say what type of gun was used.
