Garden District thefts on the rise this month

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Doug Harvey is always in the garden district visiting his girlfriend. He's always felt safe until two weeks ago when he became the victim of a crime himself.

"Sunday I was like let me grab this laptop out of the back and I was like um ok all the laptops are gone" says Harvey.

Harvey is one of many victims of auto burglaries in the garden district over the past month.

In this morning's crime spree, things were stolen like loose change and electronics.

Earlier this month a garden district resident caught someone stealing his bike from his carport on his home surveillance camera.

But for Harvey it isn't the 4,000 dollars worth of electronics gone from his cars backseat that concern him.

"You think about your peace of mind and that is the main thing that goes away when a situation like this happens" says Harvey.

But according to Mark Johnson with the Monroe Police Department it isn't a band of criminals doing this.

Typically it's just one or two people breaking in late at night.

"Some incidents 8, 9 ,10 capers a night when the detectives make the arrest 2 to 3 weeks police have been able to clear 20 to 30 burglaries at a time.

Prove the point that there is not a band of guys running around it will be just one guy it just takes us a little bit of time to track him down" says Johnson.

The Monroe Police Department recovered finger prints and are currently investigating the early morning car break in's.

They also urge garden district residents to call if they see suspicious activity and to not leave valuables in your cars at any time.
