COLUMBIA, La. (AP) - An audit finds the Caldwell Parish Police Jury granted its members a pay increase without advertising the increase or holding a public hearing, which violates state law.

The error was noted in a report released this week by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's office and reported on KNOE 8 News Monday.

The board voted in the first meeting of January 2012 to increase jurors' pay from $800 to $1,100 a month and to increase the president's pay from $900 to $1,200 a month.

Lanny Dark, who served as president at the time, said the jury did not know it was doing anything wrong at the time the vote was cast.

The pay increase has been written into the 2013 budget, so the raise is compliant with the law for the next year.
