MARION, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A motorcyclist and his passenger are dead after running into a deer in Union Parish.

Louisiana State Police said it happened Friday night around 8:30 p.m. on state highway 143, south of state highway 827.

Troopers said 63-year-old Barrett Kenny was heading north on the highway when his vehicle struck a deer crossing the road. Investigators said the motorcycle ran off the side of the road and truck a tree.

Detectives said Kenny was wearing a Department of transportation approved helmet but died as a result of the crash. Barrett's passenger, 52-year-old Melinda Weeks was not wearing a DOT approved helmet, and also died at the scene.

Both victims are from Marion.
