OAK RIDGE La. (KNOE 8 News) - Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office confirms two people are dead after their plane crashed in Morehouse Parish Thursday morning.

Officials said 74-year-old Clarence Collins, and 28-year-old Jonathan Whitacer were flying a trainer plane when they crashed in a very desolate area, miles through crops, off of Rolfe Lane in Oak Ridge.

"Approximately 11:30 we got a phone call from Richland Parish Sheriff's Department stating that there possibly was a plane crash in Morehouse Parish. Me and several others responded to this area trying to locate the plane crash itself," said Chief Deputy of Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office, Brian Shoemaker.

According to Shoemaker, the two men flew out of an airport in Rayville early Thursday morning, and investigators believe it was for crop dust training.

But when Collins and Whitacer didn't return to Rayville, hours of searching began.

"Some people with the flying service noticed that the plane hadn't made it back yet. They went and flew there, located the plane, came to the area on foot," said Shoemaker.

And then, contacted the Sheriff's Office.

"And once we were finally navigated to the area where the plane crash was, we located the plane and found the two deceased inside the plane," said Shoemaker.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be at the crash site early Friday morning to continue the investigation.
