Southside residents sign petition in favor of new red light

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A group is taking to the streets today, about the streets, Neighbors in Monroe's southside say they live next to the most dangerous intersection in town.

From her front porch, Johnnie Thomas has a view of the Texas Street - South 8th intersection.

"In 2011 there were 6, 2012 there were 13, and as of this day, July 13, we've had 10 so far," says Thomas as she remembers how many wrecks she's witnessed.

Unfortunately, Thomas is no stranger to hearing a wreck right outside her home and rushing to the scene. In 2006, one of those wrecks claimed the life of a teenager, and Thomas is hoping to put an end to the collisions.

She's gotten the attention of neighbors, and city and state officials.

"As an attorney," says Representative Marcus Hunter, "it could be people being negligent, speeding. It could be people just not paying attention that there's a stop sign right there."

Representative Hunter, and Monroe Councilman Kenneth Wilson have both requested a red light to be installed, but the Department of Transportation claims there are not enough wrecks in the area to warrant a red light.

"If we don't get it, it won't be because we haven't tried," Thomas says, "we're going to do everything, we're going to do the petitions until the end of August."

Thomas hopes the petition will convince the DOTD to give the project the green light, and stop the accidents.
