Richland Parish gas leak clean-up cause pipeline to close

DELHI, La. (KNOE 8 News) - After seeing more crews heading to the sight of a carbon dioxide leak, people in Richland and Franklin Parishes are concerned.

Repairs on a carbon dioxide leak in Richland Parish have been going on almost a month. Many people have contacted KNOE 8 News by phone, email, and social media, with concerns.

One woman sent an email saying a second well had sprung a leak and hundreds of acres are flooded. Another person wrote on Facebook that people have been evacuated and animals are dying, but Louisiana State Police says these are both rumors.

"There's no immediate public threat right now," says Trooper Albert Paxton.

Denbury Resources is repairing the carbon dioxide leak, along with 4 other well heads in the area, simply as a precautionary measure.

"Over the weekend, we did have some CO2 and some water that was swelling to the surface at one of these wells," said Denbury spokesperson Jack Collins, "we mobilized some equipment to that sight and stop the swell."

While working on one, the ground in the area became unstable. Transcanada - a natural gas company with pipelines in the area - was advised to shut down its lines. One of those lines feeds Conagra Foods/Lamb Weston - the sweet potato processing plant in Delhi.

"Well with all of our customers, we are continuing to work with to assist them in obtaining alternative natural gas supply sources until we can get the pipeline back in service," says Gretchen Krueger with Transcanada.

Conagra reports the plant will resort to an alternative method, either a temporary line or get gas by tanker trucks. Operations at the plant should not be affected. There are no evacuations at this time in Richland or Franklin parishes. LSP and hazmat teams are working closely with both gas companies to ensure the area remains safe.
