Lawsuit filed to overturn Arkansas Gay Marriage ban

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A lawsuit has been filed in state court seeking to repeal Arkansas' ban on gay marriage.

A group of 11 same-sex couples on Tuesday asked a Pulaski County judge to overturn the constitutional amendment voters approved in 2004 that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The amendment also bars the state from recognizing same-sex unions from other states.

The lawsuit was filed less than a week after the U.S. Supreme Court issued two rulings supporting same-sex couples. Justices on June 26 cleared the way for gay marriages to resume in California and struck down a federal law denying federal benefits to married gay couples. Justices, however, did not rule on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage bans.

Several of the couples have been legally married in other states.
