Cost cutting measures for Union Parish School District must total 1.75 million dollars

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Union Parish School District is being forced to find ways to chop nearly 1.75 million dollars out of it's budget. This cut is coming after reducing 1.8 million dollars last year.

The rural school district of Union Parish operates on 23 mills of local dollars which is nearly half of the funding surrounding districts. This lack of funding has caused a budget crunch the last two years calling for extreme cost cutting measures.

Last year they went about slashing the budgets so education wasn't directly effected. Now Superintendent George Cannon says that's simply not going to be possible.

"What I have to do between now and Monday is come up with a balance budget for the board whether it includes closing a school or it wont depending on what we are able to do between now and Monday to find 1.75 million dollars" says cannon.

Superintendent Cannon says all options will be exhausted before closing any Union Parish schools.
