COVINGTON, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A woman who was being booked into St. Tammany Parish Jail for failing to pay court costs has died after hanging herself in a holding cell Friday night.

Deputies have not released the woman's name. The sheriff's office says the woman, who live in Lacombe, was taken off life support on Monday at her family's request.

They say the court costs were connected to a 2009 second-degree battery arrest.

Deputies say the woman was alone in a holding cell within the jail's booking area and had given no indication of suicidal intentions during an initial medical screening.

Sgt. Sean Beavers tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/12iJ0DU ) the woman used the telephone cord from a phone in the cell to hang herself.
