ANGOLA, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Louisiana State Penitentiary has made a second donation of vegetables to area food banks.

Warden Burl Cain says the state's maximum security facility last month donated about 3,000 pounds of potatoes to West and East Feliciana Parish food banks. An additional 6,000 pounds of potatoes, cucumbers and summer squash was transported to East Feliciana facilities Monday.

Cain says this year's harvest has exceeded on-site prison warehouse space and the state Department of Corrections gave them permission to donate the food.

Angola is known as the "The Farm" for having perhaps the richest farming soil in the state. Officials say more than five million pounds of vegetables are grown on the prison's grounds every year to help feed more than 11,000 inmates housed at five facilities across the state.
