MORGAN CITY, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - A 46-year-old St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputy was killed in a weekend crash in Morgan City.

Police Chief Travis Crouch says Deputy Carril J. Cooks died Sunday in an accident on La. 182 near Aycock Street. Crouch says a preliminary investigation indicates that Cooks, driving a motorcycle, was headed east on La. 182 when he left his lane and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck a sport utility vehicle head on.

Cooks was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV's driver and three passengers suffered minor injuries.

Cooks was a six-year veteran of the agency who began his career as a road deputy in 2007 and moved to narcotics two years later.
