LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - The Arkansas Department of Community Correction has a new director after the abrupt resignation of its former agency head.

Sheila Sharp will take over on July 8 and replaces David Eberhard, who quit effective Monday. The agency has been under fire since it was disclosed that a Little Rock parolee remained free despite felony charges being filed against him after his 2008 release from prison. The parolee was charged in May in the death of a Fayetteville man.

Sharp has been a deputy director in the state Department of Correction. The Corrections Board voted Monday to name her to the post permanently.

Eberhard told the chairman of the state Board of Corrections last month that he would retire effective Monday.
