MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- In the fall eight new officers will be out and about in the city of Monroe. Monday was the first official day for five male and three female officers in the Monroe police department.

Next week, they will begin formal training at the police academy. After being selected from 53 applicants, these eight officers under went extensive civil service testing, background investigation, medical and psychological testing as well as approval from a five man review board which gives insight into potential situations the officers may come across. Sargent Mark Johnson from the police department feels they have selected only the best for the city of Monroe.

"Out of 53 applicants now what that tells us is we just didn't hire the first people who come around and put a badge and gun on we wanted to make sure we had the best qualified people to serve our community and we feel we got that with these eight officers" says Johnson.

The new officers will be sworn in Monday then begin the police academy for the next 15 weeks. They will replace several who have retired from the department.
