BEEKMAN La. (KNOE 8 News) - An old school with a long history, now has a new name. The former Beekman Junior High is now the Beekman Charter School.

It opened in 1914, and Monday, it continued construction to hold more students.

"This is our first day of operations and as you can see behind me, we are putting together modular building that will serve as temporary facilities until we can get permanent facilities built," said Roy Mccoy, Principle of Beekman Charter School.

School organizers pitched the idea in January of 2012, and were approved one year later.

Beekman Junior High used to teach pre-k through eighth grade, but this August, it's expanding through tenth grade, and come august 2014, it'll go through twelfth grade.

The school plans to have the project complete by 2015.
