I-20 Board member refuses to attend meetings

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Only four members are left on the I-20 Economic Development Board, and one of those refuses to attend another meeting.

I-20 Board member Ernest Johnson told Economic Development Officer Dwight Vines that he needed to see the next meeting's agenda to decide whether he'd attend. Because Johnson skipped the last meeting, Vines brought him the agenda, and invited our camera.

Vines pointed out to Johnson what was on the agenda, including a change order in a current construction project that needs approval from the board. Without Johnson at the meeting, there are not enough members to meet quorum and take a vote. The project is currently on hold until the board can vote.

Currently the I-20 board is being investigated by the Legislative Auditor, and Johnson claims that's his reason for not attending the meetings.

"I made the decision to not attend no meeting until they get that straight," says Johnson.

That's when KNOE Reporter Jillian Corder asked Johnson how he felt about causing the construction project to shutdown.

"I understand you don't want to get caught up in the investigation, but there are things that need to be acted upon, but without you, they can't do that," says Corder.

Johnson replied that he understands what is being asked and says "...but at this time I would rather not comment on that."

I-20 Board member, Mayor Jamie Mayo, has the power to remove anyone from the board. He says it's every board member's responsibility to attend these meetings, and if they don't he will take action accordingly. Another board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, at 5:00 in the Mayor's conference room.
