RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Les Guice has been looking forward to Monday July 1st since December when he found out he would be the new president of Louisiana Tech. It's just one of many changes taking place at the university.

Les Guice has been associated with Louisiana Tech for most of his life. He first came to the university as a student and has worked in many different capacities since.

"I had the opportunity to teach here for a while, now been administrating at the university for about 25 years. Moving in to the Presidents role is really an exciting opportunity," said Les Guice.

Guice is in charge of overseeing 11,000 students and an athletic department that no longer has an athletic director. He says he is excited for the changes and opportunities the school now has as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs change conferences and increase exposure.

"Conference USA is a national, high profile conference that gives us great rivalries with institutions throughout the region. We believe it will be great for our fan base," said Guice.

In addition to the administrative changes and switching athletic conference's there is one more change school officials want to see take place. Last year the school's mascot Tech 20 died of heat stroke and they think it's time for a new one.

"We're excited about the prospects, we can't wait to get a new bull dog but we want to make sure that everything is in place to insure that we can care for that animal in the best possible way," said Dave Guerin.

Students we spoke with say the changes taking place are a step in the right direction.

"I think it's awesome we have a new president, I think it's really awesome we're having a new sports conference," said Analise Brown.

Tulane and Southern Miss are just a two of the new rivals tech's future athletic director, new president and bull dog mascot will face in their new roles come this fall.

School leaders are looking for a new caregiver before they select a new bull dog as their mascot. They are also taking applications for the athletic director's job and hope to have their team complete soon.
