New mayor sworn into office in Bastrop

BASTROP La. (KNOE 8 News) - A new Mayor, for a Morehouse Parish community.

And he said he's going to hit the ground running, and change the way people look at his town.

Prayer, song and laughter filled Bastrop City Hall.

The new Bastrop City Mayor, Arthur Jones was sworn in next to other City Leaders in front of the community, family, and friends.

"We have a lot of work to do and I guess we have a short time to do it, but we'll get it done," said Jones.

And Jesse Deball, a native to Bastrop said he knew Jones for many years, and the town of Bastrop could not ask for a better man to get the job done.

"People want someone that will be straight with them. Someone they can go to and talk to when they have a problem. And I do believe deep down in my heart that he is the right man for the job," said Deball.

Jones wants to start changing things from square one, and start by changing the way people see Bastrop.

"The way we present ourselves you know, we got to make it a more presentable city. Where people come in and their first impression is that you want to stay," said Jones

While people in Bastop say they're confident that Mayor Jones can turn their town around, they said they're aware that the changes will take time.

"We have beautiful parks around here. There's a lot of things that need to be done and the people of Morehouse Parish really need to give him time," said Deball.

"You have to give their families something to do. There is no sense building a business here in Bastrop and then having to go somewhere else for recreation," said Jones.

Jones said to make any of this happen he needs to get people involved in the process in a way they know their ideas are heard and considered.

While the mayor shared in generalities some of his plans, when we asked he wouldn't provide very much detail.
