City official journal change sparking controversy

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) – The vote to change Monroe's official journal from the News Star to the Monroe Free Press continues to spark controversy. In a 3-2 vote the Monroe city council changed the city's official journal to the Monroe Free Press. This change has Mayor Jamie Mayo frustrated. He says residents have his phone ringing off the hook.

"Business will be slowed down. In fact, we are already having some issues and challenges where the public is calling and expressing some concerns. There were some people at the city council meeting that came expressing concerns about that because they are wanted to buy some adjudicated properties," says Mayo.

By law, communities are required to alert residents at least 24 hours prior to meetings and other official happenings through a publicly circulated newspaper. For the city of Monroe, the daily published News Star was the outlet until the switch to the weekly published Monroe Free Press. Mayor Mayo feels the switch is causing delays in city proceedings."We are very concerned about having a paper that is not a daily paper. One that is a weekly paper cannot accommodate the volume of public notices we have going out on a daily basis," says Mayo.

Mayor Mayo says the News Star's circulation is much larger than the Monroe Free Press, and the star has the ability to get notices out on a daily basis. We talked with Free Press publisher Roosevelt Wright, who said the paper is making the necessary adjustments to meet all of the city's notification deadlines including publishing an extra paper once a month.
