SLIDELL, La. (KNOE 8 News/AP) - Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith says a new parish-wide radio system will save the city money and functional during storms and other emergencies.

Smith told the city council Tuesday that Slidell, which leases its radio system, has only one remaining payment. That system cost the city $170,000 a year to lease plus $60,000 a year for maintenance.

Rather than replace what he described as a dying system, Smith said, Slidell has the opportunity to use a new system that the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is buying.

He said that would cost the city $150,000 a year and the city wouldn't have to pay maintenance costs.

Smith says about 200 Slidell employees, police officers and municipal workers would be on the system.
