Delhi woman gives birth on Interstate 20

DELHI, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Many expectant mothers make detailed plans of where and how they want to give birth, but sometimes even the most strategic planning, doesn't go as expected.

That's what happened Friday, when a Delhi woman going into labor didn't make it to the hospital.

Home health nurse, Anessa Martini says she is never late for work, but that changed Friday morning, when she stopped along Interstate 20 to help a family in distress.

"I'm going to be a little late, and she said 'Ok," I said but I need to tell you why, because I just delivered a baby on the interstate," says Martini, "I went past them and then I thought, something's not right."

She turned the car around, parked, and ran across Interstate 20.

"The lady had jumped out the car," says Desiree Polly, the new mother, "and he came out as soon as she bent down to help."

Within minutes of Martini's arrival on the scene, Polly had another arrival, a healthy baby boy.

"I was scared," says Polly.

An ambulance took the young woman and her baby to E. A. Conway in Monroe, where she had planned to give birth, and planned to have an epidural. She didn't make it that far, but she is glad that Anessa Martini made it to her instead.

"She's a blessing, and I thank her," says Polly.
