Army Celebrates Birthday and Turns 238

MONROE La. (KNOE 8 News) - Some new army recruits will always remember Friday.

That's not only because they officially took the oath to serve, but their commitment came on a big birthday and Flag Day.

A special "commander" was there to welcome these new recruits on behalf of Uncle Sam.

Young men and women started their first day of a long journey.

More than 20 recruits were officially enlisted into the United States Army at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum.

New recruits Dylan Pepper and Roderick Lee said they signed up out of respect for our country.

"I guess you can say the uniform. It looked good. It's more of a sense of pride and honor to be able to say that you were one of the ones to join," said Pepper.

"How they changed, and I decided I needed to change to, so I joined the army to teach me a lot of stuff," said Lee.

Shintell Jordan of Winnsboro is proud of her son, Roderick.

"I think all our youth needs to join the military. I think it gives them a sense of responsibility and dedication and teaches them that being here in a small town, it teaches them that there is more out there," said Jordan.

With a sword as their knife and a cake representing the past, present and future of the army, it was a special day to take the oath.

The Army's birthday and Flag day – and the icing on the cake, Duck Dynasty's Si Robertson shared some words of wisdom from his service in Vietnam.

"Hey it's about our nation. Citizens have always stepped forward when our nation needed them – from the beginning to the present."

Si might be known for his one liners, and actions that make us laugh on reality TV, but these words shared with new recruits like Dylan and Roderick were all about the realities and honor of serving our country.

New soldiers were welcomed across the country today as part of Flag Day and the Army's birthday.
