UPDATE: State police have identified the man killed in a chemical plant explosion as 29-year-old Zachary Green of Hammond. Notification of Green's death has been made to his family.

State Police have opened the following roads in the area surrounding the affected chemical plant: LA Hwy 30 at LA Hwys 73 and 74, LA Hwy 74 at LA Hwy 3115, and LA Hwy 3115 at LA Hwy 75 (River Road). However, the section of LA Hwy 3115 between LA Hwy 30 and LA Hwy 75 near the chemical plant remains closed as emergency personnel continue to investigate this incident.

Previous Report:

A (WAFB) - Authorities report there has been an explosion at a plant in the Geismar area and it is on fire.

According to Louisiana State Police, it is the Williams Olefin plant on LA 3115.

The Iberville Office of Emergency Preparedness says seven injuries were reported to them. Emergency crews are on the scene.

A hazardous materials team is on the scene. Reports are that the hazardous materials team is gearing up to decontaminate the area.

Troopers said LA 74 and LA 30 at LA 3115 are closed.

According to the company's website, it provides products to customers in the petrochemical industry. The Geismar plant produces 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of polymer grade propylene, both flammable gases used in industrial chemicals and plastic products.

The Olefin team is responsible for the ethane transportation business consisting of approximately 200 miles of pipelines, as well as a refinery-grade propylene splitter.

A neighboring plant says the major exposure is Butadiene spheres. They say that Williams Olefine has a hydrocarbon fire and the concern is that another explosion could occur and the fire is not under control.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
