Little traffic means less state troopers

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The bridge watch is actually little to watch so far and that's a good thing. You've likely seen more Louisiana State Troopers and exits closed on Interstate 20 than bottle necks and traffic jams.

Ben Gleason and his friend Jonathan are just two people who commute to Monroe and they, like a lot of us are surprised with the road conditions.

"We're driving around and we saw all the road closures and stuff and we were expecting to see a lot of traffic but didn't see any," said Ben Gleason.

"Whenever I first heard that the bridge was going to be closed down, I expected there to be

more traffic then I've seen," said Jonathan Fautheree.

There are occasional backups but so far no bumper to bumper traffic. DOTD has blocked off several roads to help the flow of traffic and they say the orange cones and barricades will not be moved until this bridge goes back down.

"We expect at this time, no more changes on the Interstate 20 ramps, there are very few minor

closures on the local streets that will be made and adjusted, but these are very minor," said John Eason.

If traffic remains the way it's been the past couple days, Louisiana State Troopers say they have plans in place to start reducing their staff.

"We're going to re-access the situation, see where we are at, and if it gets to a point where those officers, deputies, and troops are not necessarily needed in that area, the resources may be reallocated to other areas," said Captain Kevin Reeves.

While state troopers make adjustments to their schedules, Ben and Jonathan say they won't.

"I'll probably just go the same I time I usually would," said Gleason

"Based on what I've seen I'm really not going to leave any earlier then I have," said Fautheree.

There might not be much traffic now, but it wouldn't take much for the situation to change.

Captain Reeves says to expect reduced patrols next week at the earliest, if traffic continues to flow smoothly.
