Northeast Louisiana Veterans' Home honors Memorial Day

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - It's Memorial Day Weekend and for those who served our country and their families, it's more than just a time for barbeques and a day off from work.

Nancy Cooper is a volunteer at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans' Home, but residents know her as Mousie.

"Once upon a time a man walked in to where I worked and said I was mousie-looking, and he wouldn't let it drop," says Cooper.

She helps residents go to and from events around the home and Saturday was no different. Mousie sat next to the veteran's she helps each day for the Memorial Day program, where each branch of the military was recognized for their service.

The highest respect was paid to those the veterans' home said goodbye to this year. The name of each was read aloud and a bell rang in his honor. It was a simple sound to many, but a resounding tone to the wife of G. W. "Bear" Cooper.

"He was in the Navy," says Mousie, "he was on an aircraft carrier, and he was a signalman, and you know, back then they were in the birds nest and had the flags, and when he told me that, I said 'Oh, you were their cheerleader."

Since then, Mousie became Bear's biggest cheerleader, even when he became a NELA Veterans' Home resident more than five years ago.

"So from then on I've been volunteering and I love it," says Mousie.

Bear died in July of last year, and Mousie has her first Memorial Day without her husband. Devoting her time to others that have given so much for their country.
