Monroe City School Board names Vidrine superintendent

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe City School Board has named Brent Vidrine as the next superintendent of schools.

That decision was made during special meeting Thursday at noon. The announcement comes after several months of screening applicants and a process where a selection committee was used to recommend the top five candidates.

Last week, those candidates were narrowed from five to three when two candidates were removed from the running when they could not attend board interview sessions due to scheduling conflicts.

Monday, the public had the opportunity to meet the candidates at a forum. Tammye Turpin is hoping to land the job. She's a familiar face to the district currently serving as the Chief Academic Officer in Monroe. Turpin is up against another local worker, the principal of Neville High School, Brent Vidrine. Currently working west of the area, is Mary Nash-Robinson. She's the chief of staff for Caddo Parish Schools.

In Thursday's vote, Verbon Muhammad abstained, board member Rodney McFarland voted no in naming Vidrine and the remainder of the board voted in favor of naming Vidrine superintendent.

"After hearing from some of the people in my community, I just could not support it," says Rodney McFarland who says his vote "no" comes after hearing from the Human Resources Department that references on Vidrine's applications didn't check out, "but although I did not vote for him, I will work with him."

Vidrine is excited to take on the role of superintendent and says one of his first duties will deal with the budget.

"Our board has done a good job in the past managing the budget," says Vidrine, "and we have a deficit this year. So we are going to work on balancing that budget and be good stewards of tax payers money."

Vidrine will be offered a one-year contract for the position. Details of that contract, including pay, will be discussed in the next week.
