Vitter hopes to eliminate welfare cell phone program

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KNOE 8 News) - U.S. Senator David Vitter introduced legislation yesterday to eliminate the Lifeline program.

The Lifeline program was created in 1984 to expand landline services to low-income households through the Universal Service Fund. The program has evolved now allowing low income individuals and families the opportunity to receive cell phone service.

Vitter believes the system has expanded way beyond its original intent and believes its offensive to make taxpayers pay for free cell phones for others.
