MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A censure motion fails before making it onto the floor at the Monroe City School Board meeting Tuesday night. The author behind the measure says it stems from Board Member Rodney McFarland's behavior toward the superintendent screening committee.

"He has verbally abused them. He is intimidating. He's even accused them of having their own candidates," Board Member Vickie Krutzer said.

Krutzer is shocked after media reports of McFarland's behavior during a meeting last month, when she was absent.

"It doesn't matter, what color, race, or creed they were," Krutzer said. "We board members, none of us, have the right to treat the public that way."

McFarland says her accusations are not true and he believes it boils down to race as the guiding issue.

"She wants to censure me? And guess what? It's a racial thing. It's because I'm the black man. The black man doesn't bow down to the others," McFarland said.

Krutzer's motion failed to get a second person supporting her. That means the proposal could not make it to the voting stage.

"As she can see tonight (Tuesday), the board is not tolerating that," McFarland said. "All it's going to do is divide our community."

Also on the agenda, Krutzer's motion to go into executive session to discuss the accused misbehavior of another person in the school district failed to receive majority support.

Back in December, McFarland made a motion to censure Krutzer after a racial slur was uttered by someone else in a voicemail message left by the Krutzer. There was also a motion to censure the same board member about an e-mail.

Also, within the superintendent search process, board members are hoping to choose a final candidate this week.
