Convicted killer recaptured after 43 years

TUCKER, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas prison official says a convicted killer who escaped to Michigan 43 years ago should be returned despite his living a crime-free life since.

Lester Stiggers escaped Arkansas in 1970 and fled to Michigan where he was one of two black men that then-Gov. William Milliken gave asylum after they claimed unfair treatment in the South.

Arkansas Department of Correction spokeswoman Shea Wilson says she understands the argument that Stiggers has broken no laws in the 43 years he's been out. But Wilson says Stiggers remains convicted of first-degree murder in Arkansas and is a fugitive.

The now 63-year-old Stiggers was convicted of killing his father - who Stiggers says beat him and his mother. He was on a five-day furlough for good behavior when he fled to Michigan.
