LA budget compromise taking shape, without Jindal

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers in the House have started advancing proposals to limit the tax breaks doled out by the state. The bills will form the building blocks of a budget compromise between conservative Republicans and Democrats - a compromise that sidelines Gov. Bobby Jindal.

The House is working on a budget deal that would include a mix of cuts and new money raised by shrinking the tax break programs.

It would replace patchwork financing proposed by Jindal, despite Jindal's threats that he will veto changes to the tax break program because he considers them a tax hike.

Jindal administration leaders tried to stall the tax plans Monday, but found little support in the Ways and Means Committee. Jindal's economic development secretary, Stephen Moret, says the tax break changes would harm business attraction.
