New Mayor elected in Bastrop

BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News) - In Morehouse Parish, Bastrop selected a new mayor in a run-off election between incumbent Betty Alford-Olive and challenger Arthur E. Jones.

With the lead changing hands twice during the night, Arthur Jones was the winner in the end with a 1041 to 971 edge. Only 26-percent of voters turned out for this election.

Jones is coming out of retirement after working for the city for more than 30 years in Parks and Recreation and Public Works.

"Once we get it clean, it's going to bring the pride back into the citizens, once we get the pride back, we can start bringing jobs in," says Jones.

He says he knows the chances of bringing in another major company like International Paper are slim, but he says smaller employers are just as important.

"Bring in something, maybe 100, 200, even 50 jobs. Something to give people something to look forward to, better paying jobs," says Jones.

Jones says creating these jobs will make younger people stay in Bastrop after graduation.

"At one time they were talking about making this a retirement community," says Jones, "You can make it a retirement community, but you still have to have the young people, because old people can't take care of old people."

Jones says with his plan to create a safer, cleaner community over the next four years will help Bastrop be a more productive, attractive city.
