RESULTS: Louisiana voters go to polls

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The polls closed tonight at 8:00 p.m., and here are all the results from today's races. 

MOREHOUSE PARISH: 

On the ballot in Morehouse Parish, a new property tax of 9 mills was on the ballot. This tax was proposed to provide additional support for constructing, improving, maintaining and operating public schools for the district, including salaries and benefits of teachers and employees. The tax was soundly defeated by a vote of 2855 to 1344.

Also in Morehouse Parish, Bastrop selected a new mayor tonight in a run-off election between incumbent Betty Alford-Olive and challenger Arthur E. Jones. With the lead changing hands twice during the night, Arthur Jones was the winner in the end with a 1041 to 971 edge.

CATAHOULA PARISH:

Residents in Catahoula Parish voted approval for a 10 year parish wide property tax renewal of 5.85 mills to fund the parish school district by a vote of 478 to 278. Also in Catahoula Parish, voters in Jonesville voted down a 1% sales tax by a 143-110 vote.

CONCORDIA PARISH:

In Concordia Parish, voters in Ferriday were asked to renew a 10 mill tax to provide public safety and did so, approving the renewal by a 108 to 37 yes vote.

FRANKLIN PARISH: 

In Franklin Parish, the Crowville Fire District was seeking a new 4 mill tax for the purpose of maintaining and operating the fire district and got it by a yes vote of 273 to 32.

OUACHITA PARISH:

In Ouachita Parish, residents of West Monroe were asked to renew an existing millage of 1.63 mills for improving, repairing and maintaining public streets in the city and the voters agreed by a 327 to 32 "aye" vote.

RICHLAND PARISH: 

In Richland Parish, residents in Rayville were asked to pass a new 1% sales tax that would go into that town coffers. Again, the vote was a resounding yes, by a 160 to 69 vote.

TENSAS PARISH: 

Tensas Parish voters voted yes (373 to 139) on a parishwide 1/2 cent sales tax for the police jury. A portion of this tax will be available for the Tensas Parish council on aging to maintain and operate their facilities.

Also in Tensas Parish, two propositions were on the ballot to fund the gravity drainage district number three. Both of these propositions passed, Prop 1 by a 107 to 29 margin, Prop 2 by a 104 to 28 vote.

UNION PARISH:

In Union Parish there were two propositions voters were deciding on. Proposition number one asked voters for approval to incur debt and issue bonds not to exceed fifty-five million dollars for initiatives set forth in districts capitol improvement plan. The voters voted down this proposal by a 2509 to 1963 vote.

The second proposition asked residents to pass a new ten mill property tax for a period of ten years for the purpose of giving support to public elementary and secondary schools. Again, the voters said "no", in this case by a 2525 to 1928 vote against.

WEST CARROLL PARISH:

And in West Carroll Parish, residents were asked to renew two parishwide millages. The first proposition is to continue the 1.4 mill tax for the purpose of maintaining and operating drainage improvements. Voters said yes, by a 283 to 87 vote.

The second measure is also a renewal, for a 10.13 mill tax, which was for the purpose of maintaining roads and bridges with-in the parish. This measure was also approved, 285 to 91.

    MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe police are looking for two suspects that robbed a Kangaroo convenient store. Police say two black males entered the store, located at 4320 Desaird Street, around 3:15 Friday morning. They say the suspects robbed the store at gun point and police were able to able to get a photo of one suspect. That suspect is described as a younger black male over six feet and it appears he is wearing a Neville sweatshirt. He is considered armed and dangerous.

    MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Police have arrested a Monroe man for stabbing his nephew. Police say the Donald Ray Myles and victim got into an altercation Thursday night around 10:30. Police say Myles stabbed the victim with a steak knife, and then the victim was rushed to the hospital.
