Monroe’s Bomb Squad Gives the public a Demonstration

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe bomb squad's 40 years of expertise and training has been put to the test with three calls in just three weeks. They put on a demonstration on Thursday showing the techniques and methods they use to find out if a package is explosive. Our Nolan Crane was in attendance and has a report.

Glenn Karmel is the commander of the only bomb squad unit in Northeast Louisiana, which is here in Monroe. Today his department demonstrated some techniques his team uses when they get called out to a scene like the one on Wednesday when they got a call about a suspicious package near a Chase Bank in Monroe.

"During the last three weeks since the incident happened in Boston we have been called out on three different occasions," said Glenn Karmel.

A lot of people are familiar with the robots bomb squads use in order to find out if a suspicious package is explosive. However, there are other devices and techniques like these staged scenarios.

"We got all the way from mechanical devices, all the way to if you will hands on devices to include hydraulic devices," said Mark Johnson.

All of the devices members of the bomb squad use can be dangerous so they have to be prepared and suit-up. The bomb squad suit weight 70 pounds and it's used by a bomb tech to help with a bomb blast and its flying debris.

Members of the bomb squad and Monroe's Police Department say practice makes perfect and they want to always be prepared for their next call.

"We're not going to fall victim of it can't happen here so we're not going to be prepared for it. What we need is a good community involvement," said Mark Johnson.

Every three years members of Monroe's bomb squad unit have to be recertified to make sure they can keep us in the Arklamiss area as safe as possible.
