Eye doctors may be given the right to perform surgeries

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A bill allowing eye doctors to perform eye surgery is on its way to lawmakers. The Louisiana measure is calling to give optometrists almost full authority to do any sort of eye surgery. That includes using certain methods like needles and burning and freezing tissue. If the bill becomes law, they'll also be able to inject patients with many drugs. The measure is being supported by several eye doctors in the state.

"We believe that eye surgery should be performed by eye surgeons, in general surgery should be performed by surgeons," Dr. Karren Laird-Russo said. "Surgeons are medical doctors, people who have gotten a doctorate of medicine from a medical school."

The bill was given the thumbs up in a committee last week in a 12 to 7 vote. The state house could see this measure as early as Monday.
